It’s our first hiring pie chart of the year! In 2021, growth marketers have remained a favorite with MarketerHire customers. However, some hiring patterns shifted in January, too: Companies hired fewer paid social media marketers than they did in December, and more email and content marketers.

Email marketers likely spiked because customers wanted to retain their influx of holiday customers, said MarketerHire’s director of marketing Tracey Wallace — plus, email is hot right now, between HubSpot acquiring the Hustle (for eight figures!) and the escalating “newsletter arms race” among Substack, Twitter and Facebook.

Apple’s forthcoming privacy update is “100% playing a part” in these trends, too, Wallace said — marketing teams want to “ramp up owned channels” while uncertainty haloes paid ones.
